How much should a handyman charge per hour?

There's no single right number. It depends on what you want to earn and what it costs to run your van. The math: (income goal + yearly overhead) ÷ billable hours, plus a margin for profit. Because driving, estimates and supply runs aren't billable, most handymen only bill 55–65% of the hours they work.

Flat rate vs hourly

Many handymen quote small jobs flat-rate. Use your hourly number to build the flat rate: estimated hours × your rate + materials with a markup, and set a minimum charge so short trips still pay.

FAQ

What is a good minimum charge for a handyman?

Commonly one to two hours of your rate, so a short visit still covers the drive and setup.

Should a handyman mark up materials?

Yes. A markup covers the time spent buying, hauling and returning materials, plus the risk of waste.
