One square is 100 sq ft of roof. Measure the footprint including overhangs, multiply by the pitch factor (√(1 + (rise/12)²)), divide by 100, then add 10% waste for simple gables or about 15% for hips and cut-up roofs. Most architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square.
